A lot of horses have problems with the hair on their mane getting tangled. This is a problem for several reasons, the first is that it does not look good. Far bigger problems however are that the hair will not be as strong as it should be and will not grow as well as it should and that the tangles can become home for bugs. Fortunately there are steps that you can take to keep your horse's mane from getting tangled.
The first thing that you are going to want to do to make sure that your horse's mane does not get tangled is to wash it on a regular basis. This does not mean everyday but once a week to once a month is ideal. You will also want to use a conditioner on the hair when you wash it, this will really help to keep the tangles out.
After you wash the hair you are going to want to put a horse mane trainer on your horse. This is simply a cover that you put over the mane. The idea is that it will allow the mane to lay flat while it dries, this will not only help to prevent tangles but also keep the hair from going all over the place. You can get a horse mane trainer at almost any horse supply store and they are easy to use. The only thing that you have to worry about is making sure that all of the hair is going the same way when you put it on. You will want to leave the trainer on until the hair is dry.
Once you take the horse mane trainer off the next thing that you will want to do in order to avoid tangles is to give the hair a good brush. This should not be done to frequently so you really only want to do it after you wash the hair or when it is obviously necessary. Make sure that you do a thorough job with brush and that you get all of the tangles out.
One last option that you have for preventing tangles in your horse's mane is to braid it. This is usually done to make the horse look good if he is going to be shown but it can also be an effective way to prevent tangles. Braiding the hair will take a fair amount of time if you have never done it before but once it is done you will no not have to worry about tangles for several months.
